infinite mind posted a reply: Right now I'm running Win XP pro. I decided to try the GIMP for simple Photo Editing and a few Graphic design projects I'm working on, It acts buggy on windows for some unknown reason; not to get on the topic about which is better windows or linux, but I have used GIMP on a linux SuSE distro. and I did not get as many errors.

Vieira posted a reply: The final users are not supposed to compile anything. Even in Linux. When I said platform-independent. I was talking about the binaries. I don't use Windows, so I am a bit oblivious to your problem. Sorry.

mortimer? posted a reply: @contrasto_gp: I use The Gimp 2.0 on my mac with OS X and have no problem at all, it runs seamlessly. But you are right, it's quite impossible to find compiled plugins for OS X and compiling the plugins is really difficult.

obtr32 posted a reply: They are platform independent. However, if you are a windows user, it is very hard to complie. The website that I found has the plug-ins pre complied in exe form and ready to "plug in". The only problem is...these seem to be pretty old and don't work very well with the newer gimp programs.

Stopped. posted a reply: Contrasto: Yes, Linux is the premier platform for GIMP and in the 1.2 releases (back in the day), it showed badly. The thing was hardly usable on "Windows" at all. Since 2.0, I found it to be quite robust on "Windows", too. However, if the plug-in thing bothers you, do yourself a favour and spend some quality time with a nice Linux distribution. If you're into the scripting and plug-in world already, Linux shouldn't be too much of a challenge for youl.

lady_elsinore posted a reply: Actually Stopped, I've liked UFRAW quite a lot, though what you're saying about high volume capability/batch jobs is true. I think DCRAW can do batch jobs though--seems like I was reading something about that recently. Regardless, for my needs, UFRAW/GIMP under Linux is working just fine, but then I'm not a pro. I have switched to shooting RAW+sm jpg, which I've found speeds things up for me, because I can load up a boatload of the small jpgs in GIMP and review them quickly, closing out the ones that I don't want and keeping open the ones I do, so I can reference them when pulling up the RAW files. Also, if my lighting is pretty consistent, I don't really have to futz with UFRAW much, because it keeps the previously used white balance, curve adjustments, saturation, etc. @contrasto_gp: That may be a lot to deal with and learn, but Linux offers a lot of benefits, particularly with respect to security....

Vieira posted a reply: I thought plug-ins were platform-independent. Anyway, they're probably a file you have to drop in the right folder, no .EXEcutables or things alike.

Vieira posted a reply: Well... you didn't expect "Photoshop is best" as an answer in this group did you? This is biased, and always will. A fellow flickrer said in a forum that software is just another tool in your photography 'arsenal'. You should consider the cost and what you want - no software can get you the pictures a wide angle lens can. So it really depends on your demands. Identify the features you want in your photos that you can't have with your current equipment. Then start looking for ways to achieve that. If you have a question on how to get a desired effect using GIMP, and how complex it is, we'll probably be able to answer you. But just asking wich piece of software we prefer isn't gonna help you much, IMHO. Edit: GIMP runs on Unices, Windows and Mac, contrasto. There's no need to learn to use a different OS just to choose a photo editing software.

contrasto_gp posted a reply: I started to Photoshop Elements ver. 1 (...yes...) bundled with my fist digital camera, in 2003. Personally, I think that PS CS is more complete (and complex) compared with Gimp, but for my needs Gimp is ok, and I like some creative tools like scripts. And it's free. In my opinion is also stable as a good commercial software But I think that Gimp is more easy to use on Linux platform. It's sometimes difficult to find windows executables for plug ins (in fact, until now, I've never found plugins for windows..) and I think thah the major development and testing effort is made for linux. So maybe the true question is: I want to spend time to install and learn linux?
